- Strauss, David Friedrich – The Life of Jesus Critically Examined [the George Eliot 1846 trans.] How anyone could continue to believe that the gospels are devoid of even the tiniest error after reading this scholarly masterpiece, I’ll never know! (Well I do, but it points to prostitution of the intellect.) What a 19th-century tour-de-force.
